Art of the Land

The Land Conservancy of McHenry County is accepting applications from area artists for the Seventh Annual Art of the Land, a juried art show and sale that will be held September 18-19 at the historic Starline Gallery in Harvard.

Art of the Land is an opportunity for regional artists to share their work that is inspired by the local landscape.

“There are so many creative people in and around McHenry County who draw their inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds us.  Art of the Land is a way for area artists to support preservation of the local land by sharing – and selling – their creations,” said Mary Mariutto, a Crystal Lake artist who helped found the event in 2009.

Artist guidelines and application materials will be available Monday, May 4th at  Hanging art, sculpture and floor pieces will be considered.  Additionally, there is a limited amount of space for artisans (fiber, clay, wood, wearable, glass, and the like).  The application deadline is July 31st. The jurors’ decisions will be announced by August 14th.  TLC retains 30% of all sales  to support TLC’s land preservation mission.

The Land Conservancy of McHenry County is a local nonprofit organization that works with individuals and communities to preserve the rural character and natural heritage of McHenry County. More information can be found at or by calling 815-337-9502.

New Venues for GLAF Member Artists:

  • TINY TREASURES EXHIBIT AUGUST 11 - SEPTEMBER 26, 2015 Pyle Center, UW-Madison RECEPTION & AWARDS for Tiny Treasures SEPTEMBER 25, 2015, at Evening With The Arts The deadline is July 10 for work to be received.

WRAA and WRAP provide unique artistic opportunities. WRAA assists with regional WRAP exhibits, the State Annual Art Conference and the financial management of State Award funds. It also prints WRAP’s annual color catalog and Contour Notes, a quarterly publication covering WRAA news and WRAP shows.

WRAA has sponsored Tiny Treasures for the last 5 years. To be part of this year’s event, create a 2 ½ x 3 ½” original piece of art (unmatted and unframed). Enter as many as you’d like – submit $10 and a separate ID label for each one. Tiny Treasures entries from previous years cannot be submitted again. A registration form can be found in Contour Notes, downloaded from or from the attachment. All entries will be exhibited on-line at and at the Pyle Center in downtown Madison. If a piece is donated to “Buy-it-Now” it is available for purchase for $25, which benefits the publication of the annual color catalog.

Not only are there cash prizes for the top 3 Tiny Treasures (1st Place $100, 2nd Place $75 and 3rd Place $50), 12 additional “Treasures” will also be featured in WRAA’s 2016 Timely Treasures pocket calendar. You don’t have to be a WRAA member to participate - although new members are always welcome! Professional and nonprofessional artists can participate.

Tiny Treasures must be exactly 2 ½ x 3 ½ “. They are floated inside a mat (they are smaller than the mat’s opening). I’ll mat them for you so that every Treasure will be displayed the same way.

Check out WRAA’s website, to see entries from previous years and get more information on how Buy-it-Now works.

This year there are three benefactors for the donated TT's - Wounded Warrior project, Middleton Public Library and Hope House of Baraboo. Questions? Email Phone is 608 445-2517.
