Karen Mathis is an award-winning artist in both watercolor and oil. Her works have received awards by nationally known judges, including the Curator of the Phillips Gallery, Professor of the Corcoran School of Art, and Chairman of the Art Department of the George Washington University, all of Washington, DC.
Her paintings appear in The Collected Best of Watercolor, The Best of Watercolor and in Watercolor, Planning and Painting. Her oil paintings are included in 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Design from George Washington University in Washington DC.
Karen is an Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists, am member of The American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America and the Light Chasers of Sarasota, Florida.
Karen painted in Watercolor most of her years in Washington, DC. When she moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, however, she started painting en plein aire and changed her medium to oil, which she found easier to use on location. She painted in plein aire competitions in the Mid-Atlantic, Canada and Florida. Most recently she paints most of her paintings in the studio from smaller studies. Her passion in painting has been to capture the ever-changing qualities of light on the landscape, specializing in boats and waterways.
